The Coventry (formerly Popcorn Club), a legendary Queens music venue that shaped the 1970s rock scene in New York City, has been honored with a historical Queensmark Award by the Queens Historical Society.
Known for helping to launch the careers of bands such as KISS, The Ramones, and the New York Dolls, the Coventry’s impact extended far beyond its walls, embodying Queens’ contribution to the cultural fabric of New York City and the global music scene.
The award marks the Queens Historical Society’s broadening of its traditional scope to recognize architectural heritage and local institutions that foster creativity, community, and opportunity.
In tandem with the award a new mural has been unveiled on the exterior of Sanger Hall, a Queens establishment that is also committed to celebrating local community, culture, and the preservation of live music located at 48-20 Skillman Avenue in Queens.
The mural, created by New York street artists Dylon Thomas Burns and Dylan Bauver, captures the Coventry’s historic influence on New York’s music scene and celebrates the artists who made their debut on its stage.
