- Adelson is said to have considerable influence over Trump, as she was his largest campaign backer last year
Dr. Miriam Adelson wants to be best known for her philanthropic endeavors, championing pro-Jewish policies and strengthening Israel — not being the largest shareholder of the world’s largest casino company. During his speech on Monday before the Knesset, the unicameral legislature of Israel, President Donald Trump singled out the casino billionaire for her ongoing efforts to lift the Israeli and Jewish people.
Doing a victory lap after negotiating a Gaza ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas, Trump addressed the Israeli legislature. Adelson, who had been reportedly pressuring Trump to intervene in the deadly conflict that began in October 2023, made the trip to Jerusalem to celebrate the tentative end to the war.
Trump, whose 2016, 2020, and 2024 elections were heavily funded by Adelson and her late husband, Sheldon Adelson, the founder, chair, and CEO of Las Vegas Sands, who died in January 2021, recognized the 80-year-old for her continued support.
In exchange for hundreds of millions of dollars in campaign support, Trump, at the request of the Adelsons in 2018, relocated the US Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. The Adelsons had front-row seats at the embassy’s opening.
That same year, Trump bestowed the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Dr. Adelson, citing her philanthropy supporting Jewish schools, Holocaust memorials, Israeli military organizations, and substance abuse programs.
Trump Recognizes Adelson Influence, Israel Favoritism
On Monday, Trump once again highlighted the Israeli-born billionaire and her late husband’s influence on the US government’s policy regarding Israel.
“Every president for decades said, ‘We’re going to do it.’ The difference is that I kept my promise and officially recognized the capital of Israel and moved the American Embassy to Jerusalem. Isn’t that right, Miriam? Look at Miriam. She’s back there. Stand up, Miriam. Stand up,” Trump said.
Miriam and Sheldon would come into the office, they’d call me, he’d call me … I think they had more trips to the White House than anybody else I can think of. Her husband was a very aggressive man, but I loved him. He would call me up and ask, ‘Can I come over?’ I’d say, ‘Sheldon, I’m the president of the United States. It doesn’t work that way,’” the president continued.
“They are responsible for so much. Miriam, stand up, please. She really loves this country. She and her husband are so incredible, we miss him dearly,” the president added before venturing into controversial remarks.
I’m going to get her in trouble with this, but I once asked her, ‘Miriam, I know you love Israel. What do you love more, the United States or Israel?’ She refused to answer. That might mean Israel,” Trump stated.
“I must say, we love you. Thank you, darling, for being here. She’s a wonderful woman,” Trump concluded regarding Adelson.
Comment Backlash
In remarks sent to Casino.org, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is demanding that all political leaders, including Trump, cut ties with the GOP megadonor.
We welcome President Trump’s honesty in sharing the level of influence Miriam Adelson wields over our government, as well as exposing her refusal to say whether the United States or Israel is more important to her. We encourage President Trump and all American political leaders to reject support from Ms. Adelson and anyone else who supports genocide and prioritizes the interests of a foreign government over our own nation,” the CAIR statement read.
CAIR’s mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam and to empower American Muslims.
