The First 46ers: A Centennial Celebration

2025 marks the 100th anniversary of Herb Clark (#1), George Marshall (#2), and Robert (Bob) Marshall (#3) becoming the first individuals to climb all 46 Adirondack High Peaks over 4,000 feet.
These three men’s accomplishments and spirit of adventure have inspired many fellow hikers to follow in their footsteps. What began as a trickle in the 1930s through the 1960s, has become a steady stream of hikers, where close to 20,000 climbers have become a 46er, with many more reaching the goal every year.
Adirondack History Museum in Elizabethtown, in Essex County, NY, will host “People & Peaks: A Centennial Celebration of the First 46ers,” this Saturday, September 20th.
The program will include an introduction by Ron Konowitz; presentations by Doug Arnold, Peter Slocum, Sharp Swan, Suzanne Lance and L. John Van Norden; and music by Nocturnne (Natalie Kurgan).
Doors open at 9 am for an opportunity for visitors to see the exhibits and enjoy coffee and muffins. The program begins at 10 am with music, speakers, and presentations, followed by a BBQ Picnic & Social at 1:30 pm with chicken, sides, cake, and Lake Placid Brewery beer.
Admission is FREE, but please RSVP here for planning purposes.
People & Peaks is a public education event, underwritten by the Grace Hudowalski Charitable Trust.
Adirondack History Museum is located at 7590 Court Street in Elizabethtown, New York.
