The Clinton County World War I Record, 1917 – 1919

The Clinton County World War I Record, published by the Clinton County Historical Association (CCHA) and compiled by CCHA past president Noel Stewart, is an overview of the roll of Clinton County before, during, and after the First World War.
Topics include war preparedness, the draft, contributions on the home front, records of the Clinton County men and women who served in the armed forces including burial information, and the Clinton County homecoming event on August 5, 1919.
The publication is dedicated to County World War I Veterans and to the citizens of Clinton County who supported them on the home front. The primary list of 1,675 Clinton County World War I veterans was developed from the “Homecoming” sections of The Plattsburgh Daily Press editions August 4th and 5th,1919. Towns were responsible for developing a list of their veterans and sending it to the paper for publication.
In 1919 New York State enacted the “Historians Law” which established local historians in every village, town, and city across New York State whose primary purpose was to help compile New York State’s role in the World War. This law provided for our local town and village historians of today.
The 814-page 2-volume set is available for purchase or research purposes at the Clinton County Historical Association, 98 Ohio Avenue, on the Old Base in Plattsburgh, NY.
