The Capture of Fort George on May 11, 1775

This week’s episode of the Lake George Battlefield Moments podcast welcomes back historian, Lake George Battlefield Park Alliance trustee, and occasional New York Almanack contributor Bruce Venter to discuss the Patriots’ capture of Fort George on May 11, 1775 and the circumstances surrounding it.
Typically its believed that Captain Bernard Romans (ca 1720–1784) led the capture of the Fort on the southern end of the lake from the British the day after the British surrendered Fort Ticonderoga.
A local militiaman, Daniel Parks of the Queensbury area, was also on hand with the dozen or so others who captured the Fort. Many believe that Romans may have arrived late and Parks was actually the man responsible for the victory.
You can listen to the podcast on the Alliance’s YouTube channel here.
Next Sunday, May 11 beginning at 10 am the Alliance will host a live 45-minute program on Fort George’s capture by the Patriots at the fort’s actual ruins inside Lake George Battlefield Park.
Presentations will be made by Bruce Venter and fellow Alliance Trustee Pat Niles on what occurred that day precisely 250 years ago, and what followed. With the assistance of Fort William Henry, there will also be a re-enactment of the handing over of the fort’s key to mark the beginning of Patriot control at the site.
The Lake George Battlefield Moments podcast is produced by the Lake George Battlefield Park Alliance, a friends group supporting the Lake George Battlefield Park Historic District in Lake George, Warren County, NY.
