Rangers Conduct Overnight Search For Missing Hiker in Seward Range

On April 8th at 10:15 pm, Ray Brook Dispatch received a call from a subject concerned about a 57-year-old friend who was one day overdue from a hike on Seward Mountain. Seward in the Adirondack Park’s Seward Range, is the 24th-highest of the Adirondack High Peaks, with an elevation of 4,361 feet (1,329 m). The mountain is located in the town of Harrietstown in Franklin County and is named for New York governor William Seward.
Six New York State Forest Rangers started searching for the man at 2:30 am, and 12 more Rangers later joined the search. One crew located the subject’s snowshoe tracks after brushing below four inches of fresh snow. The Rangers followed those tracks for 100 yards and continued in that direction.
At 12:36 pm, the Rangers located the subject sheltering at the Ouluska Pass lean-to off the Northville-Placid Trail. The hiker was tired, but otherwise in good health. Rangers escorted the hiker back to the trailhead where he was met by a family member. The search operation ended at about 5 pm.
