A former Atlantic City casino hotel developed and owned by President Donald Trump is once again up for sale.
The long-shuttered Trump Plaza’s remaining hotel tower at 2201 Boardwalk and rear garage across Pacific Ave., which includes 2,658 parking spaces, is back on the market. The vacant lot next to the Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall, where the original 39-story Trump Plaza structure stood until it was imploded in February 2021, is additionally included in the offering.
The seller of the closed hotel and parking garage, encompassing 10.7 acres, is IEP AC Plaza, LLC, a subsidiary of Icahn Enterprises. Listed by commercial real estate brokerage Avison Young, the Trump Plaza listing does not include an asking price.
Previously listed in 2023 by brokerage Binswanger, the Boardwalk property includes 1.87 million square feet and is zoned for “resort commercial.”
The Boardwalk-facing part of the property is where Rainforest Café and Nathan’s Famous restaurants once operated. The structure in which the restaurants are housed is likely a teardown, as the building is severely rundown and presumably on the brink of being condemned.
Trump Plaza Demise
Billionaire corporate raider Carl Icahn took possession of Trump Plaza when he acquired Trump Entertainment Resorts (TER) in 2016. The casino had sat closed since September 2014.
Trump operated TER for 13 years, losing around $1.1 billion running his casinos in Atlantic City. A private equity firm eventually took control of the organization in bankruptcy, and Trump departed the New Jersey shore town, though he agreed to allow the casinos to continue using his name in exchange for a branding fee.
In August 2014, Trump unsuccessfully sued to have his name removed from the Trump Taj Mahal, which is today Hard Rock. In their heyday, Trump’s Atlantic City casinos were luxurious properties.
Since Mr. Trump left Atlantic City many years ago, the license entities have allowed the casino properties to fall into an utter state of disrepair and have otherwise failed to operate and manage the casino properties in accordance with the high standards of quality and luxury required under the license agreement,” Trump’s 2014 lawsuit alleged. “The Trump name has become synonymous with the highest levels of quality, luxury, prestige, and success.”
Trump’s bet on Trump Plaza — opened in May 1984 at a cost of almost $1 billion — was a colossal failure. The property’s high-roller suites were rarely used, and the casino underperformed against its competitors. Trump’s opening of the Taj Mahal in 1990 only exacerbated Trump Plaza’s problems.
Epstein Story
Trump critic Jack O’Donnell, who worked as president and COO of Trump Plaza for four years until April 1990, told CNN in July that he saw the future president with Jeffrey Epstein on multiple occasions in Atlantic City.
He frequently came down to Atlantic City, the two of them, to attend special events,” O’Donnell said. “In my mind, [Epstein] was his best friend.”
O’Donnell detailed one incident in which a woman not old enough to gamble was with Trump and Epstein on the casino floor, though she was over the age of 18 but not 21.
Trump has denied O’Donnell’s claims, calling him a “f***ing loser.”
“I brought the guy in to work for me. It turns out he didn’t know much about what he was doing,” Trump said of O’Donnell.
