Planet Hollywood returns to NYC with 360-degree video screens instead of movie memorabilia

Planet Hollywood, the iconic movie-themed restaurant chain that launched in the 1990s and closed during the pandemic, reopened in Times Square following a $20 million transformation. The new iteration of the restaurant won’t be a total 90s throwback, with the walls and ceilings covered in high-definition screens that will transport diners to “thematic worlds” to make “every meal an epic journey.” The reopening marks a fresh chapter for Planet Hollywood and the restaurant will replace its signature movie memorabilia-filled interior with over 692 video tiles showing interactive videos.

Planet Hollywood first opened its flagship restaurant in 1991 on West 57th Street, with stars Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, and Demi Moore in attendance, according to the New York Post.

The restaurant relocated to 1540 Broadway in 2000 and closed during the pandemic.

While some diners may miss the restaurant’s signature decor, the new 8K resolution video displays lining its perimeter make the space “infinitely adaptable,” creating a dynamic dining and entertainment experience suited for everything from intimate gatherings to large celebrations.

As patrons enter the restaurant, a glowing staircase greets them, serving as a sculptural homage to the Art Deco era. After ascending the stairs and entering the second-floor dining area, guests are whisked away to a luxurious setting, with a canopy of glowing stars hanging above and walls pulsing with synchronized video projections, soundscapes, and interactive elements.

On the third floor, the immersive experience transcends to new levels, with video screens embedded in the dining room’s ceiling in addition to the walls. This 360-degree video imagery surrounds guests as they enjoy their meal, with every part of the interior thoughtfully designed to enhance the dining experience.

“We’re relaunching Planet Hollywood in Times Square not just as a restaurant but as an all-encompassing sensory experience that magnificently combines innovative technology with the unique flair of Hollywood,” Robert Earl, founder and CEO of Planet Hollywood and Earl Enterprises, said.

“This venue is poised to deliver exceptional entertainment and dining in the spirit of New York’s celebrated theatrical grandeur.”

The venue transforms into a late-night hotspot, with the second and third floors becoming a nightlife hub after dining hours. Both floors feature multiple bars offering signature cocktails, as well as two DJ booths.

The menu offers a mix of elevated classics and nostalgic favorites. Guests can enjoy a range of appetizers, salads, burgers, sandwiches, pasta, and entrées, with highlights like Kobe Cheesesteak Empanadas, Prime Rib Sliders, Chicken Caesar Salad, the All-American Double Smash Cheeseburger, Spicy Rigatoni Vodka, NY Strip Steak, and Lobster Pot Pie.

For a taste of the restaurant’s past, the “1993 Icons” menu pays tribute to its original offerings, featuring classics like the World-Famous Chicken Crunch, Planet Nachos Grande, L.A. Lasagna, and St. Louis BBQ Ribs.

Planet Hollywood New York is open from 11 a.m. to midnight on Sundays through Thursdays and until 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. These hours don’t include late-night events, which will be announced soon on the restaurant’s website.
