Texas country singer, known for songs like “Country As Fuck,” was on a three-month headlining tour
Paul Cauthen, the Texas country singer known for songs like “Country As Fuck,” “Cocaine Country Dancing,” and “Fuck You Money,” and an outsized personality to match, has canceled his current tour to “take care of his mental and physical health.”
A statement attributed to “Team Paul Cauthen” posted on Cauthen’s social media on Thursday read: “Starting today Paul is leaving the road and going back to Texas to take care of his mental and physical health. We all love Paul very much and we are very happy and relieved that he has made this decision to put himself first. It is obviously necessary to cancel all of his shows for the foreseeable future and each venue will be able to provide information on cancellations and refund. Join us in lifting up Paul and anyone near you that may be suffering.”
Cauthen was currently on a headlining tour in support of his latest album, Black on Black, that was slated to stretch into April. He was scheduled to perform tonight at the Admiral Theater in Omaha, Nebraska. The venue’s social media noted the “show canceled.”
A cult but outrageous figure in country music, Cauthen has grown a fan base with brooding often funky country songs built upon boasts and swagger. He frequently performs in a fur coat (even in the heat of last summer’s Stagecoach Festival in California, where he was joined onstage by Lana Del Rey) and is photographed carrying a cane, both elements of a persona he calls “Big Velvet.”
“‘Big Velvet’ is something I can kind of blame or put excuses on if I get wild onstage,” he told Rolling Stone in 2022. “I like to put on my cape and lean into show business. We try to be Superman. When I was a kid, I was told by my granddad, ‘This is your kingdom. When you stand up on a stage, you’re the king. You’ve got to own everything in the room and show everybody that you got the light and you’re there to shine it.’”
In May 2023, Cauthen canceled some concerts following his arrest on drug charges in South Carolina.
