NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch Sells UES Co-Op for $10.5M
Jessica Tisch, the NYPD commissioner and scion of one of New York’s wealthiest families, has sold her Upper East Side duplex co-op for $10.5 million, a haircut from its original ask but still a healthy gain from the purchase price.
The sale of the 4,000-square-foot spread at Nine East 79th Street closed Aug. 12, according to city records cited by Crain’s. Tisch and her husband, venture capitalist Dan Levine, first listed the prewar four-bedroom last March for $13 million, ultimately shaving about 20 percent off the ask to get it done.
The deal breaks down to $2,625 per square foot. The couple bought the unit in 2011 for $8 million from Tisch’s parents, James and Merryl, who helm and represent the family behind Loews Corp.
The buyer is Jonathan Berger, co-founder and chief executive officer of TP Birch Grove, a Hudson Yards-based investment arm of Dan Loeb’s hedge fund Third Point, which manages about $12 billion. Berger paid cash, records show.
The duplex comes with Central Park views, a formal dining room, a gas fireplace and five and a half baths. But even for pedigreed co-ops in prime UES locations, aspirational pricing has met reality in the past year. Deep-pocketed buyers are still active, but willing to wait out sellers clinging to peak-era numbers.
Tisch, 43, has spent her career in city government, moving from Sanitation commissioner under Mayor Eric Adams to NYPD commissioner last year, where she oversees 36,000 officers. Her tenure has already sparked headlines, including the launch of “Q Teams” targeting quality-of-life offenses, a throwback to broken-windows policing that critics warn could disproportionately impact minority communities.
Where she and Levine are headed next isn’t clear. Corcoran’s Deborah Grubman, David Adler and Paul Albano had the listing.
The co-op isn’t far from Victor Sigoura’s 109 East 79th Street, which recently scored a contract for a 16th-floor condo asking just under $35 million.
