New York City’s world-famous cultural institutions are set to greet global travelers arriving at the new Terminal 6 at John F. Kennedy International Airport. On Monday, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and JFK Millennium Partners announced a partnership with the American Museum of Natural History, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art to permanently display installations from each institution in the airport’s new $4.2 billion terminal.
This curated arts and culture display will introduce international visitors to the city’s creative spirit and enhance the world-class passenger experience at JFK. The four institutions are just one part of Terminal 6’s expansive art program, which will also feature 19 major permanent site-specific installations curated by the Public Art Fund, alongside rotating exhibitions of local artwork curated by the Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning.
Lincoln Center will contribute a 140-foot mural, displaying a “visual symphony” that embodies the energy, artistry, and dynamism of the famous performing arts campus. The mural will blend scenes from across the campus, depicting artists from music, theater, dance, and opera.
Set against Lincoln Center’s architecture, its legendary venues, and the city streets, the piece offers international travelers a stunning first impression of the city as a global stage where culture, creativity, and community are intertwined.
The Museum of Modern Art is partnering with Yoko Ono to present a special installation for the terminal. Inspired by Ono’s 2019 museum-commissioned work “PEACE is POWER,” the installation invites travelers to reflect on the depth and urgency of her message.
The American Museum of Natural History will present images drawn from its halls, featuring iconic pieces such as the museum’s Tyrannosaurus rex specimen and Rapa Nui figure, selections from the Hall of North American Mammals, and highlights from new spaces like the Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s installation will reflect the institution’s mission to preserve 5,000 years of art from across the globe. Images of objects from each of the museum’s 17 curatorial collections will greet travelers in a colorful, energizing display that embodies New York City’s status as a global cultural mecca.
“Thanks to the collaboration with four of New York’s premier cultural institutions, Terminal 6 will offer arriving visitors from around the world a unique New York experience before they leave the terminal,” Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton said.
“Along with an extraordinary public art program, state-of-the-art architecture, cutting edge technology and iconic, locally inspired dining and shopping, we are creating a world-class passenger experience at Terminal 6 that will be among the best in the world.”
Terminal 6 is the final component of the JFK Vision Plan, which was unveiled in January 2017 to modernize and expand the airport. The terminal is being developed in two phases, with the first six gates scheduled to open in 2026 and full completion expected by 2028.
Ground broke on Terminal 6 in February 2023. More than a dozen domestic and international airlines will operate from the new terminal, including ANA, Avianca, Cathay Pacific, JetBlue, Lufthansa, and SWISS.
The new terminal will include 10 gates, nine of which will accommodate widebody aircraft. It will also include a state-of-the-art automated baggage system, multiple airline lounges, a new ground transportation center, the latest TSA screening technologies, and one of the longest departure curbs at JFK, complete with airline-branded drop-off zones.
At the heart of the JFK Vision Plan is the new $9.5 billion all-international New Terminal One, which broke ground in September 2022 and is being designed by AECOM Tishman and Gensler.
Other components include the $1.5 billion expansion of Terminal 4, led by Delta and JFK, and the $425 million expansion of Terminal 8, led by American Airlines, as 6sqft previously reported.
To better accommodate travelers during a peak summer construction period, AirTrain fares to JFK are discounted by 50 percent through Labor Day. The discount was announced in June amid expectations of record-breaking travel and congestion caused by ongoing construction at the airport, which is expected to clog local roadways.
