The tidal portion of the Hudson River (below Waterford) comes especially alive with fish, birds, river otters, and many other species of wildlife during April, as spring flowers appear along its banks. The blooming of yellow forsythia and the pinkish-white magnolia are good bioindicators that shad, herring, striped bass, and Atlantic sturgeon will soon arrive to spawn.
Wading birds like great blue herons, black-crowned night herons, and great egrets return to stalk the abundance of fish in the river; while bald eagles, hawks, and falcons soar overhead, looking to swoop down on their next meal.
North American river otters, known for their playful and comical antics, are active mating and raising young, and can be observed along the riverbanks, especially during dusk and dawn.
