Kieran Culkin joked that he once landed a role because of how well he mimed a blow job during an audition.
The “Succession” star, 42, recalled the intimate details of the casting on the Dec. 13 episode of “The Graham Norton Show.”
Appearing alongside actors Daniel Craig, 56, Nicola Coughlan, 37, and his “A Real Pain” director and co-star Jesse Eisenberg, 41, Culkin chimed in during a conversation about audition horror stories.
“I auditioned for the play ‘subUrbia,’ and the playwright was there — Eric Bogosian — and there’s a part where the character, Buff, has to mime giving a blow job,” Culkin explained.
“And I got the part that day,” he added with a smirk before cutting off Norton and the audience as they began to laugh. “No — don’t. Stop. ‘Mime,’ I said.”
“[The playwright] goes, ‘You know what it was? It was the blow job,” Culkin recalled.
“And I said, ‘Oh, why? Did none of the other actors drop to their knees?’ And he goes, ‘No. You were the only one that cupped the balls.’”
“That’s acting,” Norton responded as the crowd burst out laughing.
“Always cup the balls!” Culkin added with a roll of his eyes.
“There’s gonna be a dance mix,” Norton added, prompting Craig to nearly do a spit-take. “Cup the balls! Cup the balls!”
Culkin starred in the 2006 Off-Broadway revival of “subUrbia,” an anti-utopian look into the lives of seven youths who meet at the parking lot of a Pakistani-owned convenience store.
The play debuted in 1994 at Lincoln Center.
Culkin was just nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for his work in Eisenberg’s “A Real Pain,” which follows mismatched cousins David and Benji as they tour Poland to honor their grandmother. Their adventure becomes complicated as old tensions resurface while exploring their family history.
As Culkin revealed on Norton’s show, Eisenberg cast him without ever seeing him act in anything.
“He cast me without auditioning me or seeing me in anything ever,” the Emmy winner said.
“And he goes, ‘Yeah, but that’s fine. I’m aware of you.’ I go, ‘What do you mean?’ He’s like, ‘I’ve met you before.’ We met twice in passing!”
Eisenberg explained, “It’s his essence. Look at his essence!”
“I don’t know how to describe it, except it just felt exactly right. He’s amazing.”
“A Real Pain” is in theaters now. It is expected to be available for streaming via premium video on demand on Tuesday, Dec. 31.
