‘I’m Not Hungry for It Anymore’

In a rare new interview with Mojo, Genesis frontman says health issues have sapped his desire to return to studio

In a new interview, Phil Collins reveals that health issues have not only prevented him from performing live but have also sapped his desire to make new music.

Speaking to Mojo, Collins said, “I keep thinking I should go downstairs to the studio and see what happens. But I’m not hungry for it anymore. The thing is, I’ve been sick, I mean very sick…”

It’s unclear whether Collins is suffering from new ailments in addition to the deteriorating back condition that has limited both his mobility and his ability to play drums; during Collins and Genesisfarewell shows in 2022, he enlisted his son Nic to play drums, with Phil only serving as vocalist.

Collins’ interview is part of a larger Mojo package that serves as a retrospective of all eras of Genesis, from the Peter Gabriel prog years to the Collins-led hit-making trio. Gabriel did not participate in the Genesis reunion shows in 2021 and 2022, but he did attend the London gigs.

“Phil wasn’t in as great a shape as he used to be, but they did a great job,” Gabriel told Mojo. “Me going was a rite of passage, really. I’d been part of the creation of Genesis, so I wanted to be there at the end.”

Collins hasn’t released any solo music since his 2010 covers album Going Back; his last original music arrived back in 2003 in the form of the Disney soundtrack Brother Bear. It appears the drought for new music — one of the longest currently in rock — will remain indefinite.
