Huawei nova 13 and 13 Pro go international, FreeBuds Pro 4 tag along

The Huawei nova 13 series is going global and the two selfie-obsessed phones are joined by the Huawei FreeBuds Pro 4.

The Huawei nova 13 and 13 Pro are inspired by plaid and use a unique nano-level pattern to create the crosshatch look. Loden Green is the hero color, and they are available in Black and White (the Purple variant isn’t coming).

The Huawei nova 13 Pro display is a 6.78” LTPO panel with variable refresh and Always-On Display (AOD) mode. The phone is rated IP65, so it can survive accidental encounters with water – and the Splash Touch feature makes sure that the touchscreen remains usable.

The Pro model has not one but two telephoto cameras – one 12MP 69mm unit on the back and one 8MP 52mm unit on the front. This gives it extra flexibility when shooting portraits (self-portraits or otherwise). The 50MP main camera on the rear has an adjustable aperture (f/1.4 to f/4.0) that allows it to perform better in different lighting conditions and it has OIS to help in the dark.

The vanilla Huawei nova 13 has a more basic 50MP camera on the back with a fixed f/1.9 aperture and no OIS. Both phones use the same 8MP ultrawide camera.

Both phones also have 60MP ultrawide selfie cameras (17mm, 100°) for group selfies. The AI Best Expression feature makes its debut with the nova 13 series – it works on individuals and on groups, automatically scanning and picking the best expression for each person.

Both nova 13 phones are equipped with 5,000mAh batteries and support 100W fast charging. The Pro is slightly faster and can get its battery to 50% in 9 minutes, the vanilla model needs a minute longer.

Huawei nova 13 comes in Black, White and Green versions in a single 12/256 GB version. It will retail for €549. The nova 13 Pro has the same three color options, but offers 512 GB of storage alongside the 12 GB RAM. It will cost €699.

Huawei is introducing a new brand for audio, dubbed Huawei Sound, and kicks things off with the FreeBuds Pro 4, which have the “Huawei Sound” logo emblazoned in gold on them.

The buds have a dual-driver design, featuring an 11mm quad-magnet dynamic driver. They can stream up to 2.3Mbps lossless audio (24-bit, 48kHz), though that depends on phone compatibility (older models like the Pura 70 Pro drop down to 1.5Mbps, other phones drop to 990Kbps).

For passive noise isolation, the Huawei FreeBuds Pro 4 come with shape memory foam ear tips. For phone calls, the buds combine four mics (three traditional ones and one bone conducting mic), plus AI noise reduction, to provide clear audio even in challenging environments – Huawei claims it can eliminate up to 100dB of noise (think night club levels of sound) or strong winds up to 10m/s.

The buds have dual device connection, so they can be paired with your phone and laptop and will switch automatically as needed. They have wear detection too, to pause when you take them out. But you may not need to do that as Head-Motion Controls allow you to control them with a simple nod.

The Huawei FreeBuds Pro 4 are available in Black, White and Green. They will retail for €199 with availability to be separately announced in each market.
