The 11,500-acre Indian Head Wilderness is located in the towns of Saugerties and Woodstock, Ulster County, and Town of Hunter, Greene County, NY, and has five major peaks that offer amazing views of the Catskills and the Hudson Valley.
Adventure seekers can hike the rugged 25-mile Devil’s Path, a popular and challenging trail that crosses the summits of Indian Head, Twin, Sugarloaf, and Plateau mountains before continuing into the Hunter–West Kill Wilderness.
There are also numerous other trails to explore for varying hiking abilities — ranging from the shorter 0.3-mile Roaring Kill Trail to the 5.3-mile Mink Hollow Trail. Visit DEC’s Indian Head Wilderness webpage for more specific trail information.
Advanced mountain bikers can take the Overlook Turnpike Primitive Bicycle Corridor that runs along a portion of Devil’s Path before continuing on Overlook Trail, or they can choose the Mink Hollow Primitive Bicycle Corridor to ride along the Beaver Kill, a tributary of Esopus Creek.
For campers, there are 10 designated primitive tent sites and three lean-tos on the property for those seeking the classic backcountry experience.
Please be advised, the Town of Hunter has parking restrictions on Route 23A and Platte Clove Road. Park only at designated DEC parking lots, and come prepared with backup options and move on if the area’s parking lot is full.
Any illegally parked vehicle will be ticketed and towed to the Hunter Town Hall Impound Lot.
