The Hickory Legacy Foundation has been awarded a challenge grant of $1,000 from the Cloudsplitter Foundation, contingent on their raising the remaining $5,500 in design costs.

Adaptive cycling refers to the practice of modifying or adapting bicycles to enable individuals with differing abilities or limitations to participate in bicycling.

Long known for its epic skiing, Hickory is becoming a destination for hiking to the peaks of the Three Sisters and its challenging 18-hole disc golf course.

With no snow-making and the impact of climate change weather patterns shifting to warmer winters and less snowfall, the ski area is adapting its programming to increase offerings in the shoulder and summer months.

The mountain biking trail system plan transects the the Three Sisters Mountains on which Hickory sits and is planned as a five-mile network of trails constructed for varying abilities.

Once constructed the trail system is expected to operate much like their disc golf course and hiking trail system, open to the public of all skills and abilities for a fee.

“This project will put into place another outdoor recreation that supports healthy lifestyles and provides diversification of our offerings as a year round destination, enabling long term survival and sustainability,” according to a letter sent to supporters from the Hickory Legacy Foundation’s Kevin O’Brien and Michael Hayes.
