With summer winding down, it seems fitting to shift focus from the dog days of summer and onto the Catbird. The Gray Catbird is a common, vocal, and unique bird that happens to be the only fully gray bird in New York State.
Although some might consider the coloration to be plain, this bird is full of personality.
Gray Catbirds spends most of its time either in shrubs or on the ground, foraging for insects and berries. It prefers to stay low to the ground in flight, avoiding open areas.
At 8-9″ as an adult, this bird is around the same size as the American Robin, which makes finding the bird in the trees a bit easier.
While looking for the Gray Catbird, listen for its catlike calls — often containing many musical notes. You can find this bird in shrubs, brush areas, hedges, gardens, and in forest edge habitat.
The Gray Catbird is in the mockingbirds and thrashers family and can be found throughout most of New York State.
