Death and Mourning: 18th Century Funeral Practices

The Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site will host a very different program leading up to the commemoration of the Declaration of Independence’s 250th anniversary. Johnson Hall State Historic Site Manager Wade Wells will discuss the history and development of the mortuary and mourning practices of the 18th century.
Wells will explore the early advancements in the preservation and study of the deceased, and the merging trades of what would become the modern funeral industry.
He will also cover the general social, religious, and moral views regarding death that influenced the evolution of mourning practices.
His research includes personal mourning adornment, so he brings several examples of personal mourning objects for visitors to view.
The program is part of the opening of a new exhibit, “The American Revolution Experience exhibition in the Union Hotel,” opening Saturday June 28th.
The innovative pop-up exhibition includes display panels and interactive digital kiosks that use storytelling, illustration, technology and unique artifacts and primary accounts. The exhibit connects New York’s North Country ties to the Revolutionary War.
“Death and Mourning: 18th Century Funeral Practices” will take place on Tuesday June 17 at 6:30 pm at Union Hotel, 401 West Main Street, in Sackets Harbor, NY.
The exhibit is open Saturday June 28th through Wednesday July 9th, Saturdays 10 am to 4 pm, Sundays 1 pm to 3 pm, and Tuesdays through Fridays from noon until 4 pm.
