“As other festivals came into the market, we looked at what was not being served in the city of Philadelphia, and it was Black culture,” Live Nation Urban President Shawn Gee told Rolling Stone last year. “So we went deep into Black culture over the last couple of years, specifically mirroring the various genres of Black music that traditionally aren’t showcased at festivals.”

In June, the Roots will host A Roots Picnic Experience: The Class of ’95 in Los Angeles. The event will feature Nineties rap all-stars including Lil’ Kim, Redman & Method Man, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, DJ Quik, Raekwon, E-40, Goodie Mob, Havoc (of Mobb Deep), and more.
