Citi Bike to expand in Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx next fall
Citi Bike is set for a major expansion, bringing the bike-share service to 900,000 more New Yorkers in the outer boroughs. Mayor Eric Adams on Friday announced that starting in the fall of 2025, Citi Bike will roll out to underserved neighborhoods like Brownsville and Bay Ridge in Brooklyn, Norwood and Riverdale in the Bronx, and areas west of Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens. The expansion will also add docking stations in high-demand areas to accommodate growing ridership.
“Citi Bike is more popular than ever because it’s convenient, sustainable, and a quick way to get around. Bike share has become an integral part of our transportation landscape, and this expansion will bring this great service to even more communities,” DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez said.
As part of the expansion, 250 new stations with 2,900 bikes will be brought into service, roughly half of which will be electric bikes. Docks will be added to the system’s busiest existing areas, like Midtown, Downtown Manhattan, Harlem, Downtown Brooklyn, Williamsburg, Greenpoint, and Park Slope.
Once the expansion is complete, about 64 percent of all New Yorkers will live within a five-minute walk of Citi Bike.
Together with an e-scooter share program currently operating in the East Bronx and Eastern Queens, Citi Bike’s expansion will provide over 75 percent of New Yorkers with access to shared micro-mobility services.
The expansion will bring Citi Bike’s total fleet in New York City to over 36,000 bikes and 2,400 stations, nearly seven times larger than the 6,000 bikes and 332 stations featured in its original May 2013 rollout in the five boroughs.
As part of the expansion, Citi Bike will also pilot “kioskless” stations that use newer, sturdier docking equipment that allows for more flexibility in where stations can be placed.
High-demand areas set to receive additional docking stations include Midtown Manhattan, Downtown Brooklyn, and Williamsburg.
Since its launch in 2013, Citi Bike has become one of the city’s most popular transportation options. In October, the system set a monthly record with over 5.1 million rides, a 143 percent increase compared to October 2019, according to a press release.
“It’s been astounding to see Citi Bike grow from an idea into a critical part of New York City’s transportation network, now supporting over 1.6 million unique riders on their 44 million journeys this year,” Caroline Samponaro, vice president of external affairs, Lyft Urban Solutions, said. “We look forward to providing an even greater number of New Yorkers with access to this incredible bike share program.”
Citi Bike will expand to the following neighborhoods in fall 2025:
Bronx
Brooklyn
- Bay Ridge
- Brownsville
- East New York
- Kensington
Queens
- Neighborhoods west of Flushing Meadows Corona Park
