Ángela Aguilar, Becky G Perform ‘Por El Contrario’ Latin Grammys 2024
Ángela Aguilar, Leonardo Aguilar, and Becky G are taking it back to Esquinas! On Thursday night, the Aguilar siblings and Becky performed a rendition of “Por El Contrario,” their Latin Grammy-nominated track.
Becky G and Ángela Aguilar were visions in red, stunning the audience in elegant beaded gowns. They were quickly joined by Ángela’s brother, the vocalist Leonardo Aguilar and Edgar Barrera. The singers performed alongside an eight-piece mariachi band, launching into the lovelorn hit over minimal red lighting that felt like they had stepped into a Caravaggio painting. (Barrera won Songwriter and Producer of the Year earlier in the night.)
“Por El Contrario” is up for Best Regional Mexican Song alongside Los Tigres Del Norte’s “Aquí Mando Yo,” Majo Aguilar’s “Canción Para Olvidarte,” Grupo Frotera and Grupo Firme’s “El Amor de Su Vida,” and La Energía Norteña’s “Tienes Que Ser Tú.” Last year, Frontera and Bad Bunny took home the award for “Un x100to.”
Ángela’s album Bolero, co-produced by her father Pepe, is also nominated for Album of the Year. Albums by Karol G, Camilo, Kany Garcia, Juan Luis Guerra, Shakira, and Carín León are also up for the award. “Vocally, these songs expect so much from you with the harmonies and the inflections,” she previously told Rolling Stone. “The runs were different even It was so beautiful to be able to learn about that, because what’s the point of making music if it’s boring for you to sing?”
Becky has been nominated for Latin Grammys five other times, while Ángela has been up for three. Neither has yet to win a trophy.
Ángela last performed at the 2022 Latin Grammys, when she took the stage for “En Realidad.” Meanwhile, Becky joined Christina Aguilera, Nathy Peluso and Nicki Nicole for “Pa Mis Muchachas” at the 2021 ceremony.
Thursday’s telecast is scheduled to see performances from Marc Anthony, Carín León, Grupo Frontera, Joe Jonas, Pitbull, Emilia, Residente, Luis Fonsi, and Kali Uchis.
This year’s Latin Grammys air live from the Kaseya Center in Miami on Univision and Vix.
