Bad Bunny Responds to Puerto Rico Comments with Empowering Video

Puerto Rican artist shares an Instagram post celebrating icons and major historical moments on the island

Bad Bunny has a response after comedian Tony Hinchcliffe described Puerto Rico as an “island of garbage” during a recent Trump rally in New York. On Tuesday, the Puerto Rican artist shared a video on his Instagram page that celebrates the history and beauty of his home island.

The video, as text at the beginning explains, was originally the introduction to Bad Bunny’s famed
“P FKN R” show in Puerto Rico back in 2021. He decided to share the video for the first time since the concert, seemingly as a way of calling out the offensive remarks from the Trump rally. “Garbage,” he wrote in the caption, a clear reference to Hinchcliffe.

The video highlights Puerto Rican icons from every aspect of culture, from politicians to astronauts to baseball legends to beauty pageant winners. “We’re kings and queens and champions,” a voiceover in the video says. “We’re legends.”

Earlier this week, Bad Bunny posted a video supporting Kamala Harris’ agenda to build an “opportunity economy” for the island. A source close to Bad Bunny confirmed to Rolling Stone that he is supporting her candidacy for president.

Bad Bunny has been vocal about representing Puerto Rico throughout his career. Some of his biggest hits have touched on political issues on the island; “El Apagón,” for example, celebrated Puerto Rico while describing the realities its people have faced with infrastructure and power grid issues. “I was at the beach with my friends, a great, drunken party. And suddenly, I was watching the beach, the waves, and I started to go, ‘Diablo, Puerto Rico en verdad que Puerto Rico esta bien cabron. On my next album, I want to make a song about Puerto Rico, and I want it to be beautiful,’” Bad Bunny said to Rolling Stone last year.
