Oonee to open NYC’s first secure indoor bike parking hub in Sunset Park

Cyclists in Sunset Park will soon have access to one of New York City’s first secure indoor bike storage hubs. On Monday, Ailanthus, BEB Capital, and SK Development announced a 10-year lease with Oonee, the Brooklyn-based micromobility company, for a facility with space for 95 bikes at the mixed-use building One Sunset at 201 25th Street. Located next to the 25th Street R subway station, the hub—the first of its kind on the East Coast—will also offer battery swapping, charging, and bicycle repair services.

Inspired by similar facilities in the Netherlands, the Oonee hub is also the first to be included by a developer as a community benefit, according to a spokesperson. The facility will occupy the ground floor of One Sunset, a 14-story mixed-use project by Ailanthus, BEB, and SK, and designed by dencityworks | architecture.

Oonee has worked to bring the technology to New York City for years, with the first bike locker installed outside Atlantic Terminal in 2019. In 2022, the city launched a pilot program to test the company’s six-bike corral at five busy sites in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens.

Last spring, the city issued a request for proposals to bring 500 secure bike parking facilities across the five boroughs by 2029. While it appears the effort is delayed, the city expects to pick a contractor this year, according to Streetsblog.

“This is an amazing ‘first’ for the New York City region. Inspired by facilities in the Netherlands, this Hub will provide the community with easy-to-access services that make using active Transportation easier and more convenient,” Shabazz Stuart, founder and CEO of Oonee, said.

“This also represents the first time that a developer has included a facility of this kind as a community benefit, an innovative model that we believe can be replicated in New York and other cities across North America.”

“Oonee’s cutting-edge installation at One Sunset will provide an integral and unique amenity to Sunset Park and further the growth of the City’s micromobility infrastructure,” Vivian Liao, principal of Ailanthus, said.

“We are proud to deliver upon another commitment we made to the community during the pre-development process and look forward to welcoming Oonee to the building upon move-in, enhancing access, sustainability, equity, and convenience for One Sunset residents, visitors, and the surrounding neighborhood.”

One Sunset includes 187 apartments; 48 units will be permanently affordable to households earning 50 percent of the area median income.

In addition to housing, One Sunset will feature 6,200 square feet of ground-floor retail space. One Sunset is scheduled for completion this fall, with Corcoran New Development handling leasing.
