The former New Jersey home of late musician and founding member of the Kool & the Gang, Dennis “Dee Tee” Thomas, is for sale. Located at 82-84 Watchung Avenue in Montclair, the property consists of two seemingly identical four-story townhomes, allowing for multi-generational living or a smart investment. The two-family residence is on the market for $7,500,000; each townhouse is also available to rent for $18,000/month.

According to the New York Post, Thomas bought the home in 1999 for $374,000. A longtime resident of Montclair, the musician co-founded the Grammy-winning group in Jersey City in 1964 and played saxophone, flute, and percussion instruments. Thomas passed away in 2021 at age 70.
Built in 1908, the home was sold in 2021 for $1.2 million. After a thorough renovation, the new owner, whom the Post reports is an “extended band family member,” hopes to make a more than $6 million profit.
“The work that went into the house — from the craftsmanship, to the millwork and the design choices — it’s just gorgeous,” Allison Maguire, the Brown Harris Stevens agent with the listing, told the newspaper.

Set back from the street, the property has a huge wraparound porch, with each townhouse having a distinct corner of porch space. Each home has three bedrooms, four and a half baths, and an elevator connecting every level.
The main level features a double-sided gas fireplace, as well as white oak floors and custom lighting throughout. The chef’s kitchen features custom cabinetry, quartz countertops, and a nine-foot island.

The second floor features two bedrooms, a full bath, and a bonus room in the rear of the home that overlooks the backyard. A grand primary suite takes up the entire top floor, with two walk-in closets and a sunny bathroom with radiant floor heating.

The finished lower level has a family room with a wet bar, a bathroom, and a laundry room. Plus, there’s direct access to the sprawling backyard. There’s more than enough space for everyone to stay or visit; a long driveway leads to two separate two-car garages.
Montclair is a walkable neighborhood with a bustling downtown and an impressive culture and food scene. Plus, there’s easy access to New York City, with NJ Transit providing direct service from Montclair to Penn Station in under an hour.
