Free Admission to Vermont Historic Sites for Bennington Battle Day

Bennington Battle Day is a state holiday unique to Vermont, commemorating the victory of American and Vermont forces over British forces at the Battle of Bennington during the American Revolutionary War on August 16, 1777.
The Battle of Bennington took place in New York, but the name comes from the fact that the British were headed for a cache of weapons and munitions stored where the Bennington Battle Monument now stands in present-day Old Bennington, Vermont.
In celebration of the holiday, all Vermont State Historic Sites will have free admission on August 16, 2025. Most of the sites have permanent exhibitions that interpret their unique history, as well as regularly changing displays that focus on specialized subjects.
Note that Old Constitution House and Senator Justin S. Morrill State Historic Sites are closed this season for restoration. Visitors to the Bennington Battle Monument should know that the elevator that takes visitors to the observation deck is currently out of order until further notice.
