Bob Dylan’s first New York City apartment building is for sale. The singer lived in the rear third-floor apartment at 161 West 4th Street in Greenwich Village when he moved to the city in the early 1960s. Listed for $8.25 million, the four-story mixed-use building currently has five recently renovated apartments and two retail spaces.

The building has drawn renewed attention in recent years, in part due to the Oscar-nominated biopic “A Complete Unknown,” which stars Timothée Chalamet as Dylan. The film traces the musician’s early days in the Village folk scene through his groundbreaking electric set at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. While the real-life unit is not featured in the movie, Dylan’s apartment is depicted in several scenes.

Some of Dylan’s earliest hits were written during his time in the building, and the iconic cover of “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan” was shot just around the corner on Jones Street.

According to the New York Post, Dylan lived in apartment 3R from 1961 to 1964 and paid $60/month.

The property offers 20 feet of frontage and provides easy access to the diverse cultural, culinary, and retail destinations of the Village, from Cornelia and Jones Streets to Washington Square Park.

The residential units include a three-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment and four one-bedroom, one-bathroom units, all with oak flooring, stainless steel appliances, marble countertops, and exposed brick. One apartment comes with a private outdoor terrace.

The five residences are not rent regulated and are being marketed as a rare investment opportunity that combines historic significance with strong income potential. The latest unit rented at the building was a one-bedroom for $4,800/month.

Avison Young Principal and Head of Tri-State Investment Sales Brandon Polakoff, Director David Shalom, and Associate Director Ryan McGuirl are representing the seller, Icon Realty Management.

“161 West 4th Street offers investors the rare opportunity to own a legendary property in the heart of the West Village—one of New York City’s most coveted neighborhoods,” Polakoff said.

“The property’s iconic address not only offers immediate access to the city’s vibrant residential and retail markets, but also carries the cultural legacy of Bob Dylan and the artistic spirit of Greenwich Village. With its premier location, fully fair-market status, and renewed cultural relevance, this asset stands as a rare and powerful investment opportunity.”

The building is just steps from the Christopher Street–Sheridan Square and West 4th Street–Washington Square subway stations, with convenient access to the PATH train.
