After lighting up the Hudson River last year for the first time in over a decade, Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks will return to the East River. Mayor Eric Adams on Wednesday announced the 49th annual show will launch from four barges surrounding the Brooklyn Bridge, near the South Street Seaport, lighting up the night sky with a spectacular display of thousands of fireworks. Prime viewing spots will be in parts of Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn, with the city expected to launch a lottery for free public viewing tickets in the coming weeks.
A beloved New York City tradition since 1976, the fireworks show is conceived, designed, and produced by Macy’s Studios. The dazzling display features a vibrant mix of colors and shapes, choreographed to a specially curated musical score and live performances.
“Macy’s is known for bringing friends and families in New York City and across the nation together to create memories through celebrations all year long,” Will Coss, executive director of Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks, said.
“This year’s Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks show, set against the city skyline and on the iconic Brooklyn Bridge, is set to deliver an unforgettable night for millions nationwide.”
Originally held above the East River for decades, the event moved to the Hudson in 2009 to honor explorer Henry Hudson’s arrival in New York. What was meant to be a one-time move was extended for four more years through the 404th Independence Day. But after outcry from outer borough residents, former Mayor Bill de Blasio relocated the fireworks back to the East River when he took office in 2014.
In 2015, 2017, and 2018, the fireworks were launched from barges in the East River between East 23rd and 40th Streets, great for Midtown and Long Island City residents. In 2019, the show moved back to the Brooklyn Bridge. From 2021-2023, the fireworks display moved north on the East River, followed by a Hudson River display in 2024.
“The Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks show is one of New York City’s most iconic traditions, drawing thousands from across our city, the country, and the globe to witness a world-class celebration of America’s birthday right here in the heart of the Big Apple,” Adams said.
“Each year, this dazzling display lights up our skyline, boosts our economy, and brings vital support to local businesses. As we celebrate 400 years since New York City’s founding, we’re thrilled to welcome the crowds, once again, to experience an unforgettable Independence Day at our world-famous Brooklyn Bridge and East River skyline!”
Public viewing will be available at any location with a clear view of the sky above the lower East River. Further details on viewing locations, live broadcasts, and the city-run ticket lottery for public viewing will be announced in the coming weeks.
