Hiker Rescued After Being Hit By A Falling Tree

On May 3 at about 2:30 pm, NYS (DEC) Forest Rangers responded to assist staff from the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (State Parks) with an unconscious hiker a mile and a half up the Breakneck Ridge trail in Hudson Highlands State Park. The hiker was hit by a falling tree.
A tree removal project has been taking place in the Breakneck Ridge corridor, on the west side of Route 9D, just north of the Breakneck tunnel. This work is in preparation for construction of the Hudson Highlands Fjord Trail’s Breakneck Connector and Bridge, which is slated to begin later this spring.
Beginning April 21, 2025, Breakneck Ridge, other area trails, and the adjacent Breakneck Ridge Metro-North Station closed for a two-year period as part of the construction of Connector and Bridge project.
The injured man’s hiking partner called 911. The 28-year-old from Manhattan was knocked consciousness and was suffering from a skull fracture and broken leg.
Rangers and rescuers from State Parks, New York State Police, and the Cold Spring, Phillipstown, and Wappingers Fire Departments packaged the subject, who regained consciousness, into a wheeled litter for transport to an ambulance.
The rescue was completed at about 6 pm.
