Located in the northwest portion of Chenango County and about 10 miles southwest of Sherburne is Pharsalia Wildlife Management Area (WMA). Pharsalia is also the fifth highest elevation spot in the state and a designated Audubon Important Bird Area.
This forest provides great opportunities for viewing northern harriers, sharp-shinned hawks, and Swainson’s thrushes — just a few of the many waterfowl, raptor, and songbird species that visitors might find during breeding and migration seasons.
You might even catch a peek at the breeding pair of sandhill cranes. There’s an accessible boardwalk and covered, elevated viewing platform at Round Pond, welcoming visitors of all ages and abilities.
It offers excellent views of the entire wetland complex, which can also be experienced from a canoe or kayak. Make sure to visit the trails, which include a seven-mile section of the Finger Lakes Trail.
Recently, more than more than 190 acres were added to Pharsalia Woods State Forest in the town of Plymouth, Chenango County. This addition permanently conserves Round Pond and expands the property to 9,469 total acres.
