A new book, The Firehouses of Albany, by Albany City Historian and Director of Albany Firefighters Museum Tony Opalka, showcases images, maps, rich history, and anecdotes surrounding the historic firehouse of Albany, NY.
From the time of bucket brigades and early fire engines and firehouses of the colonial period to today’s apparatus and stations, The Fire Houses of Albany traces the early development of firefighting in the city through its fire houses and fire companies.
This book tells the story of the expansion of the fire service that followed Albany’s growth over 400 years since its European settlement and is filled with historic and contemporary photos, architectural drawings and historical maps of many familiar firehouses.
Led by active and retired Albany firefighters and formed in 2014 to preserve the history of over 150 years of professional fire service protecting the City of Albany, the Albany Firefighters Museum showcases Albany’s firefighting past and works to increase fire safety awareness and interest in firefighting.
The Museum, located at 384 Broadway, is open Sundays, from 1 until 3 pm and by appointment. Adults: $5 fee, Children 12 and younger are free.
