Every American President has passed through the City of New York. Some, like Theodore Roosevelt, were born there. Abraham Lincoln gave the famous speech at Cooper Union that launched his candidacy and sadly returned a few years later to City Hall in his casket.
Federal Hall was our first capitol on the balcony of which was the site of George Washington’s inauguration. Herbert Hoover spent his post Presidential years residing in the Presidential Suite at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel and John Tyler married Julia Gardiner at the Church of the Ascension on 5th Avenue and 10th Street in 1844.
Chester Arthur worked in New York first as a lawyer and later as the Collector of the Port of New York, a position which paid more than the US Presidency.
Grover Cleveland was operated on for cancer of the jaw on a yacht off of Pier A. Others, including Ulysses S. Grant, went bankrupt in the City.
On Monday, February 17 2025, from 3 pm until 5 pm there will be a short symposium at Federal Hall National Memorial on Wall Street, about American Presidents in New York City, sponsored by CultureNOW, the Lower Manhattan Historical Association, and the National Park Service.
The speakers will include Abby Suckle, President of CultureNOW and Vice President Lower Manhattan Historical Association, and Seth Kaller, a distinguished authority in the acquisition, authentication, appraisal, and sale of rare historical documents and artifacts.
